E.Ingraham Company was established in Bristol Connecticut America in 1831. It started making clocks early. This company is famous for producing so called “Dharma (Ionic clock)” like photos. Especially, the clock called “Gold Dharma” which is painted in gold is the most famous. (below) This Dharma clock is not a Gold Dharma but it is also attractive, taking advantage of wood grain (with 8 inch clock face). This was imported in the Meiji Period (1868~1912). The unique shape comes from Ionian style of Ancient Rome. Therefore, it is called “Ionic” originally. In Japan, it is called “Dharma” because the shape is familiar to Japanese.
The mechanism is basically authodox American type at that time. Usually, the gear that controls the chime is on a concentric circle of the power gear(A), but it is independent above the power gear(B). This technique is used for Kyoto Clock, too.
